Note : The codex compiled in Venetian in the mid-fifteenth century by someone who called himself Michael of Rhodes bears some resemblance to merchants’ manuals, in its overall format of a compilation of texts relating to a profession and especially in its early section derived from the abbaco tradition. However, the remaining texts relate to ship-building and navigation rather than to trade and coinage, leading to the designation of this manuscript, and those that followed it, as a separate genre, the maritime manual.
