Note : With reference mainly to three chronicles, namely the Chronicle of Morea, the Chronicle of the Tocco and the two versions of the Chronicle of Ioannina, this article demonstrates the value of Byzantine chronicles as substantial, historical, linguistic and socio-cultural sources. Through a combined historical-anthropological approach applied in the analysis of this genre, factual information regarding events and life in Western Greece and the Peloponnesos in the period of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries gains a different, more accurate interpretation. A strictly historical critical approach is also introduced to measure the chronicles' authority. Moreover, the characteristics of the three chronicles are compared with the ‘standard’ ones of the earlier (Christian) Greek chronicles, and their veracity is examined.

Note : In this article concepts and perceptions regarding death, expressed in the anonymous Chronicle of the Tocco are examined. In the process of analysis special attention is given to the integration of ancient concepts and Christian convictions referring to human nature, the difference between spiritual and physical death and the issue of life after death. In the world view of the Anonymous Author the concept of death is based mainly on Christian tradition and partly on pagan beliefs.
