Note : The author directs attention to the very element of arbitrariness which the inquisitional procedure implied. Besides the given fact that the French King Philip 'le Bel' had political as well as material reasons to urge the papacy to act against the Order of the Templars, she suggests that the church institutions had sufficient cause to investigate what appeared to be a serious case and hold hearings. Thus this essay studies two hearings (Abruzzi; Cyprus) which so far have escaped the scrutiny of historians. Although the trials in general were held with enormous personal expenditures and by obviously careful observation of procedural rules, the 'system did not really work'; it was undermined by the dynamics of a legal instrument (that is, torture), which in the end was based on the use of violence.

Note : Le patrimoine proprement médiéval de Chypre était jusqu'à présent moins connu que celui des âges les plus reculés, de l'antiquité et même de la période byzantine. Pire encore, le patrimoine lié aux deux grands Ordres militaires et religieux des Templiers et Hospitaliers, était presque inconnu. La présente étude couvrant la période chronologique entre 1191 et 1489 doit être considérée comme un travail de pré-inventaire, en vue de l'établissement d'une carte archéologique consacrée aux domaines des ordres militaires à Chypre. Elle comporte deux volets principaux. Le premier concerne cette carte archéologique et reste à l'état d'ébauche en raison de la situation politique actuelle de Chypre. Néanmoins, nous avons regroupé, site par site, le plus grand nombre possible de renseignements administratifs, topographiques et archéologiques. Le second volet concerne plus particulièrement le site de Kolossi, choisi en raison de son importance historique, de l'état de conservation du château et surtout d'un potentiel archéologique résultant des sept campagnes de fouilles. La sucrerie médiévale de Kolossi constitue un des trois sites majeurs chypriotes où sont réalisées des fouilles systématiques qui ont mis au jour d'importants vestiges architecturaux et un riche matériel archéologique liés avec la production du sucre. Les données de la fouille, comparées à celles des deux autres sites chypriotes, Episkopi Serayia et Kouklia Stavros, ont permis d'enrichir nos connaissances concernant les moulins à sucre installés dans l'île, ainsi que les procédés de production du sucre vers la fin de la période médiévale...
