Ceramics

Since the first archaeological excavations carried out in Sparta at the beginning of the 20th century, ceramic artefacts have been described and classified, illustrating the variety of products circulating in the Greek regions under Latin rule. The proliferation of excavation sites, some dedicated to the medieval period, has unearthed thousands of sherds that enrich our knowledge of the material culture of the Greeks and Latins from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Ceramics produced locally or imported from abroad now provide accurate evidence of domestic uses and commercial exchanges, both small and large scale.

This section presents summary results on production workshops, tracing the history of discoveries, the main technical characteristics, the different types of artefacts produced, and stylistic developments. Each workshop is linked to ceramic reference databases, illustrations and a selective bibliography.
