Note : Historians have differed widely in their assessments of the Byzantine historian, Nicetas Choniates, and his account of the collapse of the Byzantine empire during the years 1180–1204. Some have seen him as blaming the Latins in general and as doggedly believing that they were planning to conquer Constantinople from the outset. Others have presented him as a balanced commentator who could see wrong on both sides, and have suggested that his real explanation for the downfall of the empire lies in divine providence. This paper argues that neither assessment does justice to Choniates's skill as an historian, and that the only way to understand his explanations is to appreciate the literary genre in which he wrote. It was a genre which, although superficially dependent on classical models, based its conception of historical causation on a very Byzantine preoccupation, the character and deeds of individual emperors. For Choniates, the main reason for the collapse of the empire was the weaknesses of the emperors ruling at the time, and their failure to live up to the divinely ordained ideal.

Note : La présente étude se concentre sur la notion d’« autoréférence » dans les littératures antique et grecque médiévale par le biais de l’œuvre de l’historien et orateur de cour Nicétas Chôniatès (c. 1155-c. 1217). L’autoréférence se décline de trois manières : d’abord comme mise en scène de l’auteur par lui-même ; ensuite comme référence interne au sein du corpus nicétéen (autocitation) ; enfin comme référence des textes à eux-mêmes (métapoétique). Malgré la tentation d’une littérature immobile depuis Homère, à laquelle succombe parfois l’esthétique byzantine, force est de constater que les concepts hérités des Anciens ont muté. Cette étude de l’autoréférence aux époques anciennes opère donc un double mouvement : un premier diachronique – pour ainsi dire, de Troie à Byzance –, qui correspond à la constitution de la pensée littéraire antique puis byzantine, puis un mouvement diachronique inverse, de Nicétas à Homère, qui correspond à la réception de cette pensée par un haut lettré byzantin. L’autoréférence est ici le point d’articulation de ces deux mouvements et, peut-être, le point nodal de deux civilisations. This work is dedicated to the study of self-reference in Ancient and Byzantine literature through the works of the historian and orator Niketas Choniates (c. 1155-c. 1217). Self-reference can be understood through three prisms: as the staging of the author himself ; as self-quotation; as the self-reference of texts themselves (metapoetics). As heir of a secular literary tradition, Niketas Choniates’ art seems to be self-referential. But because it is obvious that the concepts inherited from the Ancients by the Byzantine literati have drastically changed, it is necessary to go back from the Komnenos Era (XIth-XIIth c.) to the "pretheoric" Era (Homer and Hesiod). Therefore, this study of self-reference achieves a double movement: in one hand, a diachronic movement from Troy to Byzantium, dealing with the constitution of the Ancient literary way of thinking; in the other hand, a reverse diachronic movement from Niketas to Homer, which is about the reception of Ancient thought by a Master of the Byzantine literature. Here, the self-reference is the hinge point of this two movements and maybe the nodal point of two civilizations.

Note : Niketas Choniates was in Constantinople when it was burnt and looted by the soldiers of the Fourth Crusade and he wrote a history which has always been the mainstay for anyone wishing to learn about the Comnene dynasty and the Byzantine Empire of the twelfth century. Yet it is a very difficult and puzzling text and, given its significance for the period, is understudied. The author says at the start that he wrote his work hoping that even workers and women would be able to profit from it, yet he wrote those words, and the rest of the history, in a highly convoluted, literary and at times opaque style and language. This examination is an introduction to the history of Niketas, and to the author's views of why this period saw such catastrophe for the Byzantines. It looks at Niketas' thoughts about history-writing, the emperors, and the Comnene dynasty in particular, about the presence of God in man's affairs, and the historian's attitudes to the women of the imperial family.
