Architecture of Early and Transitional Artillery Fortifications in the Eastern Mediterranean (15th - early 16th century)
11-13 June 2026, University of Patras, School of Architecture, Design Studio S5
The School of Architecture of the University of Patras, in collaboration with scholars specializing in fortified architecture, is organizing the 1st International Scientific Meeting: Architecture of Early and Transitional Artillery Fortifications in the Eastern Mediterranean (15th - early 16th century). The conference will take place in person at the University of Patras, 11–13 June 2026.
The conference aims to address issues related to the architecture, history, and technology of fortifications in the Eastern Mediterranean, following the gradual establishment of artillery in fortified architecture (early 15th to early 16th century). This pivotal period marks the transition from medieval defensive structures to the advanced fortifications of the bastioned system. The Scientific Committee intends to consolidate recent research in this critical yet comparatively underexplored field, raise specific issues related to fortified architecture, and contribute to the scholarly understanding and promotion of the period’s architectural heritage.
The event is addressed to the academic community and is open to all those interested in the architectural heritage of fortifications. Languages: Greek and English. Online attendance will be available. Zoom link to be announced.
