In the same way as written sources, the monuments built, maintained or decorated during the period of Frankish and Latin domination of Greece provide essential information for understanding the societies of the past.
According to their function, the material evidence is divided into four distinct categories:
- Religious architecture (church, cathedral, monastery, chapel, oratory, cemetery).
- Military architecture (ports, fortifications, gates, bastions, castles, isolated towers).
- Civil architecture (palaces, houses, manor houses, hospitals, squares, warehouses).
- Public facilities (mills, bridges, roads, aqueducts, fountains).
As with each textual source, the description associated with each monument is accompanied by bibliographical references, combining historical sources, recent studies and archaeological reports.
A satellite map makes it easier to locate the monument, and enables topographical research to be carried out within the various areas under consideration.
