Note : Conservée dans quatre langues différentes, la Chronique de Morée relate la naissance et le premier siècle d’existence de la principauté française d'Achaïe ou de Morée – territoire correspondant à la presqu'île du Péloponnèse –, l’une des réalisations durables (1205-1460) ayant suivi l’occupation de Constantinople et des provinces byzantines au cours de la quatrième croisade. La thèse vise à produire une nouvelle édition de la version française de la chronique selon le manuscrit conservé à Bruxelles (Bibliothèque Royale 15702, env. 1400), unique témoin en français. Le nouveau texte critique, offert dans une approche plus sensible aux problèmes de la philologie matérielle par rapport à la précédente édition (Jean Longnon, 1911), est accompagné d'une étude linguistique, un glossaire, une description codicologique, un commentaire au texte et des index, ainsi que d’une introduction qui présente le status quaestionis sur la datation et la langue du prototype à l’origine des quatre versions conservées. The Chronicle of Morea, preserved in four different languages, tells of the foundation and the first century in the history of the French principality of Achaia or Morea, a territory corresponding to the Peloponnese peninsula. This was one of the longest lasting French dominions (1205-1417), established in the wake of the occupation of Constantinople and the Byzantine provinces during the Fourth Crusade. The thesis consists of a new critical edition of the French version of the chronicle based on the manuscript preserved in Brussels (Bibliothèque Royale 15702, approx. 1400), the only witness in French. Compared to the previous edition (Jean Longnon, 1911), the new critical text is informed by an increased awareness of issues raised by material philology. It includes a linguistic study, a glossary, a codicological description, a commentary to the text and indexes and an introduction which presents the status quaestionis on the dating and the language of the prototype at the origin of the four extant versions.

Note : Rédigée dans une première version entre 1292 et les années 1320, la Chronique de Morée s'appuie sur des traditions orales pour faire le récit de la fondation de la principauté d'Achaïe à la suite de la quatrième croisade, apparaissant à première vue comme une œuvre de mémoire visant à légitimer le pouvoir des Villehardouin. Mais, remplacée dans le contexte politique, social, et militaire de sa rédaction, la chronique apporte un éclairage sur les relations entre l'aristocratie moréote et le pouvoir princier angevin siégeant à Naples : écrite dans le milieu noble de la principauté, elle en reflète les idées et laisse transparaître un « antiangevinisme » voilé, créant du même coup une identité collective moréote qui serait née de la fonction de la principauté.

Five manuscripts are known of the Greek metrical version, and one each of the prose versions in French, Aragonese and Italian. Note : The Fall of Constantinople to the knights of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 would lead to the establishment of Frankish states in the former Byzantine Empire. A unique crusader state was the Villehardouin principality in the Morea-the Greek Peloponnese where, as the Chronicles of Morea testify, a rare degree of harmony and cooperation existed between the French and the native Greek inhabitants. This dissertation studies the Old French Chronique de Moree as a fourteenth-century work of vernacular historiography which puts romance narrative techniques at the service of the truth of the Villehardouin Morea. The first section gives the historical background of the Crusading enterprise and the relationship between Byzantium and Western Europe before describing the events of the Fourth Crusade and the subsequent establishment of the crusaders in the Peloponnese. The second section discusses in detail the corpus of the Chronicles of Morea (a total of eight manuscripts in French, Greek, Italian and Aragonese), the question of the lost original and why I believe that it was composed in Old French, the Greek Χρονικόν του Μορέως and the relationship between the Greeks and the French in the space of the Morea. The third section traces the associations of courtoisie in vernacular Old French writing and studies its depiction in the Chronique de Moree. The final section discusses the links between romance-type narrative and historiography before moving to a detailed analysis of the use of romance techniques in the Chronique de Moree. In the conclusion I attempt to relate the Morea as it is depicted in the Old French Chronique de Moree—and the rest of the corpus—to certain other literary works and to the history of the Morea in later centuries. The dissertation itself is followed by a Book Style Index of the Old French< Chronique de Moree based on Jean Longnon's edition of the text.
